Keszthely-Fenékpuszta plays an important role in heritage protection as well: it is nearly 15 hectare large, mostly not built in, such as its immediate surroundings, which provides ideal opportunity to present architectural structures known in archaeology as seen by the examples of Xanten, Saalburg and Carnuntum. Today the territorial structure of the fortification is much disturbed due to a road traversing it. Moreover, the fortification constitutes a heritage entity with the Festetics building complex built in the 17th century.
The designing and structural challenge arises here: how to forge the presentation of archaeological features and the Festetics buildings into a harmonic unity. Plans so far have focused on the aspects of tourism along with reconstructing some parts of the fortification. The council of Keszthely conceived another plan in 1985 which, interestingly enough, would have transformed the marshy shore into a beach. Keszthely-Fenékpuszta is a singular opportunity, while in the future it may combine different options: an economic conception should coincide with the didactic-museoligical, heritage and scientific plans and interests. Currently, fresh reconstruction plans are under way as a result of a German-Hungarian research program.
